After last year's success TEDxKids@Brussels is back. This year on November 9, 2012, 50 kids, aged between 9 and 11 are going to become home biologists. Over the course of a single day they will be led through the basics of how to set up a biology lab, how to do experiments, and how to work together. A series of hands-on workshops will introduce the kids to a range of skills and methods related to genome sequencing, neuroscience and molecular chemistry. The big change from 2011 is that this year is ONLY for kids, no parents program, no speakers, no auditorium - just kids doing cool stuff.
As we expect a large number of applications we kindly ask you to fill in this form to submit an application.
The citadels of science are under attack. Increasingly, private citizens, alone and in collaborative groups, are taking control of scientific knowledge, processes, equipment and methods. This trend is most obvious in bio-science where people have begun to carry out sophisticated scientific experiments using readily available apparatus in their own backyards and garages. We think kids should participate and understand that anyone can do science. The advancement of knowledge is not limited to professional contexts and exclusive laboratories. Kids can use this knowledge to be more connected to themselves, to each other and to the wider world. We want to give them the tools to directly influence the physical and social ecosphere in the hope that this creates freedom and empowerment for the future.
